Retinal Pathway

To the tune of “Heartbreaker” by Pat Benatar

[Verse 1]
Light strikes photoreceptors at the back of the eye
This causes the photoreceptors to hyperpolarize

[Pre-Chorus]
Rods are specialized for conditions of low luminance
Cones are specialized for more light and colour imaging

[Chorus]
The graded potential is transmitted to bipolar cells
The graded potential is transmitted to the bipolar cells

[Verse 2]
Hyperpolarization blocks release of glutamate
The ON-bipolar cells, they are activated

[Pre-Chorus]
Diffuse bipolar cells are common in the periphery
Midget bipolar cells signal to the cones exclusively

[Chorus]
The graded potential is transmitted to ganglion cells
The graded potential is transmitted to the ganglion cells

[Pre-Chorus]
P ganglion cells receive input from the midget cells
M ganglion cells receive input from the diffuse cells

 [Chorus]
The action potential is transmitted through the optic disk
The action potential is transmitted through the optic disk
The action potential is transmitted through the optic disk
