Language Processing

To the tune of “Butterflies” by Kacey Musgraves

[Verse 1]
Sounds travel to the temporal lobe from the ears
Processed into auditory representations once they’re here

[Pre-Chorus]
From Wernicke’s Area they are sent
Through the arcuate fasciculus

[Chorus]
Wernicke’s aphasia patients
Have defects in speech organization
They can speak but often what they say doesn’t make sense
And they can have further deficits
In language comprehension
Even for single words and sentences
They are affected

[Verse 2]
Broca’s Area is where these representations are sent
Once they’re here they’re transformed into speech movements

[Pre-Chorus]
These movements are sent to muscles
That produce sound through mouth movement control

[Chorus]
Broca’s aphasia patients
Struggle with articulation
Particularly stemming movement of the mouth
Speaking is a difficult process
For producing the right sound is laborious
But as for their understanding of words
It is mostly preserved
It is mostly preserved

[Chorus]
Broca’s aphasia patients
Struggle with articulation
Particularly with movement of the mouth
Speaking is a difficult process
For producing the right sound is laborious
But as for their comprehension
It is mostly preserved
It is mostly preserved
It is mostly preserved
It is mostly preserved
